an apple a day

Matteo and I are two peas in a pod when it comes to what kinds of food we like, with cheese and fruit being our favorites. Saturday afternoon we were rushing around trying to pack the car and get ready to go to dinner so I gave him an apple to play with, thinking he'd roll it around like a ball. Ha! He figured out pretty quickly it was something tasty and delicious and the next thing I knew there were little teeth marks all over it and he was chomping away. I felt badly taking it away but I have no idea if babies are allowed to eat apples like that. Experienced mom out there, any thoughts?

what? eating apples ain't no thing, mom.
baby apple
huh? i'm not supposed to eat this?
but it's so good!

And yes, it's a total coincidence his shirt has apples all over it. I swear!

spirit week - part 2

Crazy hair day and crazy hat day. Matteo's hat isn't exactly 'crazy', more like the only one we could tie on his head and get to stay on.

downstairs upgrade

We've been in our house for almost four years and I'm starting to get itchy to re-do our basement. The finished part of our basement is home to Matt's turntables and has hosted many evenings of good friends, good drinks and good music.

Now that we have a little one crawling about it would be easy to make it a playroom for Matteo. But I also think that adults need their own spaces. And since he's already claimed most of the upstairs as his domain, I'm holding firm to the idea of keeping the downstairs for us.

Wouldn't something like this be great? I know this isn't a basement, but the idea of a big comfy chair and a place to chill out and listen to records is really dreamy. Over the past year our little party room has been working overtime as a part-time guest room/outgrown baby clothes storage area/all-purpose dumping ground for anything the baby shouldn't be getting into upstairs. I'd like to spend a little time this spring sprucing things up and creating a space that's safe for Matteo, but intended as a retreat for adults.

world's loudest baby

Matteo has always been vocal, but in the last couple of weeks he's REALLY found his voice. He loves to yell and sing and laugh - A LOT - and sometimes all at the same time. Here's a little sample of what our house sounds like these days.

regional champs

regional champs

As of Saturday night the high school basketball season in officially over. Even though Matt's team didn't make it as far as he would have liked they still finished the season with a respectable record of 13-11 and won their regional championship game. They took fourth place in their conference, which is one of the toughest in the state. Out of the three teams ranked above them, all of which were ranked in the top 15 of all Wisconsin teams, Matt's team was able to beat two of them including the team who won the state championship this weekend.

His point guard, who also was his only returning varsity starter, was named 'Mr. Basketball', the award given to the best player in the state. He also earned conference player of the year honors.

He and Matt were on TV Saturday to receive the award. I let Matteo stay up late so he could see them.

Congratulations Matt on a great first season. We love you so much and are so proud of you - and are so happy to finally have you back now that the season is over!

spirit week

It's Spirit Week at Matteo's school and yesterday was pajama day.

pajama day

Today is 60's/70's day. I'll give you one guess as to who dressed him like a Globetrotter this morning...

Next up, crazy hair day tomorrow and crazy hat day on Friday!

that tourist

The people I hung out with in Cartagena have been sending out online photo albums from our trip. Yesterday Matt came in the room when I happened to be looking at one.

"Oh please don't tell me you were THAT tourist," he said when he saw them.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"The tourist who buys the local hat and wears it all over the place as soon as they get it."

Ummm...well...

whiter shades of madison

The people behind the Stuff White People Like blog came out with a new book last year, Whiter Shades of Pale.

Look! Madison made the book:

And yes, this is frighteningly accurate. Remember my first Madison car?

walking and bouncing

Matteo's two favorite things these days are walking around with push toys and bouncing up and down when Matt makes beatbox noises.

down but not out

game face

Our little family has been neither loud not bright these last couple weeks. I had to fly out to Utah last week to take care of my Dad who is recovering from emergency surgery (he's doing much better now), Matt's team lost their first sectional game last Tuesday and their season is over, and all three of us spent the weekend recovering from three different ailments. We are beyond tired, and this daylight savings time foolishness certainly isn't helping.

Thanks for your patience, folks. We should be up and running again very soon.

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The trouble-makers. The round heads in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status-quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify, or vilify them. But the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

- Jack Kerouac

Argh the budget battle in Wisconsin. It's really taking a toll on everyone. I'm exhausted.

By the way, this is a great site.
