start to the season

the coach

The basketball season kicked off last week and Matt's team is 3-0, including a huge win last night over one of the top 10 teams in the state. Go East! His team this year is so good!

It's so fun to be in the gym after a good win. This was the end of the first game.

appreciating matteo

dad at school

During the summer, Matteo's class learns about appreciating each other. Each child gets a week where their classmates tell them what they appreciate about them, and their parents are invited in to present to the class something about their family.

Our family presentation was all about sports and how Matteo's Mom and Dad are coaches. We spent about 30 seconds talking about lacrosse (I had to cut it short once Matteo got a hold of his stick and started chopping with it), and then Matt talked about basketball. He demonstrated some ball-handling tricks and then had the kids each practice dribbling.

the big payback

This is Matt's third season coaching at East. He finished his first season with a better record than expected but season two was a clunker. Last year there were still some players left who came up under the old coach and were unwilling to meet Matt's higher expectations. Despite starting the season with considerable talent, the lack of team chemistry ultimately killed them. It was Matt's first losing season ever - as a player or as a coach - and it didn't feel good.

But Matt LOVES a good challenge. And even more, he loves being the underdog who suprises everyone in the end. Which bring us to season 3, the season Matt has dubbed "The Big Payback", going as far as to even put the phrase on the back of the team's t-shirts and play the James Brown song before each game.

Last night was the first test and they pulled it out, beating their east side rival in a thrilling game that was decided by a basket from his senior point guard with 10 seconds on the clock.

60-59

(This was also a team they didn't beat at all last season and was noted in the pre-season polls as one to watch, while Matt's team wasn't expected to do much of anything.)

Afetr the game, Matt went back to the locker room and wrote at the top of the dry erase board - THE FIRST PAYBACK, and the name of the school they just beat. The second test comes on Saturday against a team that made it to the state championship last year. I think they might just be able to pull it off.

And you want to know why high school basketball games are so fun? Because when you win like they did last night, the crowd does this:

and so it begins

Basketball season is underway, which means time with Matt is at a premium. Matteo is constantly asking for his Dada, which is kind of sad but also really wonderful when you see how excited he gets when Matt finally gets home after practice. They've played two games so far and, amazingly, Matteo was able to last for the whole game both times. While we can't go to all of them, we know enough people in the crowd at the home games who can help me keep an eye on him.

regional champs

regional champs

As of Saturday night the high school basketball season in officially over. Even though Matt's team didn't make it as far as he would have liked they still finished the season with a respectable record of 13-11 and won their regional championship game. They took fourth place in their conference, which is one of the toughest in the state. Out of the three teams ranked above them, all of which were ranked in the top 15 of all Wisconsin teams, Matt's team was able to beat two of them including the team who won the state championship this weekend.

His point guard, who also was his only returning varsity starter, was named 'Mr. Basketball', the award given to the best player in the state. He also earned conference player of the year honors.

He and Matt were on TV Saturday to receive the award. I let Matteo stay up late so he could see them.

Congratulations Matt on a great first season. We love you so much and are so proud of you - and are so happy to finally have you back now that the season is over!

Even more kids showed up today! The local prep sports writer is also going to write about the camp in his weekly column, which will run later this week.

camp - day 1

Matt's basketball camp started today. There were more than 40 kids there! They've raised a lot of money already and hopefully will raise even more selling the rest of the shirts we ordered. I signed the kids in this morning and it was really fun to look in the gym and see all these kids lined up wearing our shirt. We pulled it off!

first christmas

Sorry for the hiatus, folks. Christmas was wonderful and busy and a little overwhelming for Matteo so we needed a day to decompress. We even had to stop opening gifts Christmas Eve and unwrap the rest on Christmas because he started to go into sensory overload. And then I forgot my camera at my in-laws Christmas night and won't get it back until Thursday, so I don't have pictures yet.

This was a great age to have a first Christmas. He's crawling and yelling and laughing and super aware of everything going on around him. Although I don't have the photos, I do have some short movies to share.

First up - guess what Matt got him for Christmas?

eastside pride

Matt's basketball team is competing in a tournament in Minnesota next month and the team has to raise all the money for the trip themselves. Transportation, food and hotel rooms for 14 players plus coaches = a lot of money they need to raise on their own.

We came up with the idea of holding a mini-camp for kids who are part of NESYB. NESYB is a volunteer-run, non-profit organization whose mission is to positively influence the lives of kids through basketball. It's a great organization and serves as a feeder program for the high school team Matt coaches. The camp will be held next Tuesday and Wednesday, will be run by his players, and the campers are invited to stay after and have lunch with the team and watch them practice.

Because a lot of these kids don't have money for any extras right now we're making it free for the kids. Instead of charging a fee to participate we're asking individuals and local businesses to sponsor campers. A donation of $25 will send a kid to the two-day camp, provide them lunch both days AND one of these sweet t-shirts that were designed by my brother's friend.

Eastside Pride

The image on the shirt is a hybrid of Peppy and the team's best player. After the holidays we'll be selling them at school and around the neighborhood as a second fundraiser.

I spent Saturday with two of his players (including the one on the shirt who was asked to pose for a picture at one place we stopped) going to local businesses and asking for support. Many of the business owners were East grads and knew who these players were because they still follow the teams. (One sports bar owner, who sponsored four campers, also told us he'd buy a bunch of t-shirts from us to sell in the bar.) The players felt good, the business owners felt good about giving back to their school, the kids who come to the camp next week are going to feel good - it's warm fuzzies all around.

We still need a few more sponsors before the camp starts next week. If you would like to sponsor a kid for $25, or buy one of our Eastside Pride t-shirts for $10, send me an email and start feeling those warm fuzzies yourself.

Thanks for your support!

start of the season

This is Matt's first season as a head high school basketball coach and practice started this past week. This morning his team had their first scrimmage and Matteo and I went to watch. It's very likely that this will be the only game he makes it to because the regular season games start at 7:30 p.m., half an hour after he goes to bed.

The school's nickname is the Purgolders. What's a Purgolder? Why it's what you get when you combine the school colors, purple + gold.

baby purgolder

Their mascot's name is Peppy the Purgolder - not super intimidating, but pretty darn cute.
